What is the difference between cULus, ULC, FM, and AHJ approval for FireFlex systems?
cULus and ULC are listing pathways, FM is an approval pathway often required by insurers or owners, and the AHJ is the final authority that accepts the installation in the field.
These terms are related, but they are not the same.
What each one means
cULus
This indicates a product or assembled unit has been evaluated to applicable UL requirements for U.S. and Canadian market acceptance.
ULC / CAN-UL
This is the Canadian compliance side used when the project or authority requires Canadian listing recognition.
FM Approval
This means the system or equipment has been evaluated under FM Approval standards. FM is commonly important for industrial facilities, critical operations, and FM Global insured properties.
AHJ
The AHJ is the authority having jurisdiction. The AHJ does not replace listings and approvals. Instead, the AHJ reviews the design, documentation, and installation to determine whether the project complies with the applicable codes and local requirements.
When to choose which
- Choose a cULus / ULC listed configuration when the project specifications or local code basis require it.
- Choose an FM approved configuration when the insurer, owner standard, or project specification requires FM.
- Always submit clear documentation to the AHJ, because AHJ acceptance is still required even when the system is listed and approved.
Practical rule
A listed or FM approved Integrated Fire Protection System is easier to approve, but it still must be installed within the manufacturer’s limitations and the applicable code.
